from 50's quaint, to current rustic
The owners objectives were to retain the "country charm" but to bring it up to date.
Functionally: the wall between the kitchen and the living area had to go. This way our chef is able to fully participate in all the activities and interact with her husband, two teenage daughters and any guests.
Structurally: we had to leave the two posts. I incorporated them seamlessly into the design.
This also created the opportunity to have an island with seating, here the kids can do homework and the chef can have company without anyone actually "in" the kitchen.
There was a door at the far end that was redundant to the French doors in the adjacent dining area. Removing the door allowed for additional counter space as well as storage.
There was a small garden window that was visually divided by too much framing. We replaced that with a larger "picture" window.
